Formulated On Published Research

The 4 Principles Behind
Döconie 5D

Every active earns its place. Here's the reasoning — and the research behind each one, including its limits.

1

Apply When The Follicle Is Listening

Hair follicles aren't passive tissue behaving identically around the clock. They carry their own peripheral circadian clock — the same machinery that governs sleep. Applying at night also means the actives sit undisturbed for hours instead of being brushed, styled or sweated off.

Linked studyPeer-reviewed · ex vivo

Researchers at the University of Manchester found that organ-cultured human hair follicles express core clock genes and proteins — CLOCK, BMAL1 and Period1 — with genuine circadian rhythmicity, establishing that the follicle's own clock helps regulate hair cycling independently of the brain's.

Al-Nuaimi Y, Hardman JA, Bíró T, et al. "A Meeting of Two Chronobiological Systems: Circadian Proteins Period1 and BMAL1 Modulate the Human Hair Cycle Clock." Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 2014;134:610–619. Read the study →
2

Counter Androgen Suppression With Caffeine

Caffeine is among the most studied cosmetic actives in hair science, and the interesting part is specific: it doesn't merely stimulate follicles, it counteracts testosterone's suppressive effect on them. That matters when shifting hormone ratios are the driver rather than age alone.

Linked studyPeer-reviewed · ex vivo

In a human hair organ culture model, follicles from patients with androgenetic alopecia showed significant growth suppression under testosterone. Caffeine at 0.001% and 0.005% counteracted it, and caffeine alone produced significant stimulation, confirmed by Ki-67 staining.

Fischer TW, Hipler UC, Elsner P. "Effect of caffeine and testosterone on the proliferation of human hair follicles in vitro." International Journal of Dermatology, 2007;46(1):27–35. Read the study →

Note: an ex vivo organ culture study, not a clinical trial. It establishes a mechanism, not a guaranteed outcome.

3

Address DHT At The Source — Botanically

DHT forms when 5α-reductase converts testosterone, and it's the principal driver behind follicle miniaturisation. Rather than a systemic drug, Döconie uses Capixyl™ — Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 with red clover extract — alongside pea sprout extract (AnaGain™).

Linked studiesRandomised · placebo-controlled · n=30

Capixyl™: Biochanin A, red clover's principal isoflavone, suppresses both isoforms of 5α-reductase. In a randomised, placebo-controlled study of 30 volunteers with receding hair, four months of application increased anagen hair by an average of 13%, decreased telogen density by 29%, and improved the anagen-to-telogen ratio by 46% over baseline.

Loing E, Lachance R, Ollier V, Hocquaux M. "A new strategy to modulate alopecia using a combination of two specific and unique ingredients." Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2013;64(1):45–58. Read the study →

AnaGain™: Topical 2% pea sprout extract raised FGF7 expression by 56% and noggin by 85%. Noggin inhibits BMP4, which suppresses the telogen-to-anagen transition. The anagen-to-telogen ratio improved from 4 to 7.2 over three months.

Grothe T, Wandrey F, Schuerch C. "Clinical evaluation of pea sprout extract in the treatment of hair loss." Phytotherapy Research, 2020;34(2):428–431. Read the study →

Note: both are small studies, and the Capixyl work was conducted by the ingredient's developer. Worth citing; not the last word.

4

Sandalore Isn't Just A Scent

The calming sandalwood aroma is what customers mention most — but it was chosen for a reason beyond the sensory. Human hair follicles express an olfactory receptor, OR2AT4, and the synthetic sandalwood odorant Sandalore is its known ligand. The pleasant part of the ritual and the functional part are the same molecule.

Linked studyPeer-reviewed · ex vivo

A University of Manchester team found the epithelium of human hair follicles expresses OR2AT4. Stimulating it with Sandalore prolonged growth in ex vivo scalp follicles by decreasing apoptosis and increasing IGF-1. Blocking or silencing the receptor inhibited that effect, confirming it was receptor-dependent.

Chéret J, Bertolini M, Ponce L, et al. "Olfactory receptor OR2AT4 regulates human hair growth." Nature Communications, 2018;9:3624. Read the study →

Note: conducted on ex vivo follicles in organ culture. A lab mechanism, not a clinical endpoint.

What 3–6 Months
Actually Looks Like

4.8Excellent

Based on 1,247 verified reviews. We publish the honest four-star ones too — hair takes twelve weeks, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.

At 58, the part line was the giveaway

Menopause thinned mine gradually enough that I didn't notice until a photo did it for me — the part had widened and I couldn't unsee it. Two oils before this left my roots greasy enough to need washing every morning. What sold me was the nozzle: it reaches the scalp instead of soaking the hair. By month four the part photographs noticeably narrower.

Nothing for six weeks, then it clicked

Honest version: nothing happened for six weeks and I nearly threw it out. Around week nine I compared my temple photos side by side and the difference was obvious. Four stars only because they should say far louder that you'll see nothing for a month and a half, and that this is normal.

My silk pillowcase survived

I'd given up on scalp products because of greasy roots — my last pillowcase was a casualty of a castor oil phase I don't want to discuss. This dries in seconds, nothing transfers. Four months in my part line photographs noticeably narrower.

Hair Thinning, Explained

The Questions
Behind The Product

Straight answers on what causes hormonal hair thinning and what the evidence actually shows. Written to be quoted — by people and by machines.

What causes postpartum hair shedding?

Postpartum shedding is telogen effluvium: the hormonal drop after birth pushes an unusually large share of follicles into their resting phase at the same time, so they shed together.

It typically begins two to four months after delivery, peaks around month four, and resolves on its own within six to twelve months. It is diffuse rather than patchy, and it is not permanent — the follicles are dormant, not lost.

Why does hair thin during menopause?

Falling oestrogen raises the relative influence of androgens on the scalp, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) gradually miniaturises sensitive follicles so each new hair grows finer than the last.

Unlike postpartum shedding this is progressive rather than self-resolving, and it usually shows first as a widening part line rather than as handfuls in the shower. A cross-sectional study of postmenopausal women found female pattern hair loss in 52.2% of them.

Source: Chaikittisilpa S, Rattanasirisin N, Panchaprateep R, et al. “Prevalence of female pattern hair loss in postmenopausal women: a cross-sectional study.” Menopause, 2022;29(4):415–420 — female pattern hair loss found in 52.2% of 178 postmenopausal women. Read it →

Does topical caffeine actually help thinning hair?

In laboratory studies, caffeine counteracted testosterone's suppressive effect on isolated human hair follicles and stimulated growth on its own at concentrations of 0.001–0.005%.

That finding comes from ex vivo organ culture rather than a clinical trial, so it establishes a mechanism rather than a guaranteed outcome. Caffeine remains one of the most studied cosmetic actives in hair science.

Source: Fischer TW, Hipler UC, Elsner P. International Journal of Dermatology, 2007;46(1):27–35. Ex vivo organ culture — establishes a mechanism, not a clinical outcome. Read it →

What is a botanical DHT blocker?

A plant compound that inhibits 5α-reductase, the enzyme converting testosterone into DHT. Red clover's biochanin A is the best-studied example and suppresses both isoforms of the enzyme.

Botanical inhibitors are applied topically and act at the scalp, which is why they are formulated into cosmetics rather than taken systemically like pharmaceutical inhibitors.

Source: Loing E, Lachance R, Ollier V, Hocquaux M. Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2013;64(1):45–58. Randomised, placebo-controlled, n=30. Read it →

How long before a scalp serum shows results?

Allow twelve weeks. Scalp follicles spend two to six years in the growth (anagen) phase and about three months resting (telogen), so a hair shed today cannot re-enter growth and become visible sooner than that.

Ingredient trials on this class of active report measurable change at three to four months. The reliable way to judge is a photograph of the same section of scalp, in the same light, every four weeks.

Sources: Grothe T, Wandrey F, Schuerch C. Phytotherapy Research, 2020;34(2):428–431 (measurable change at three months); Loing E, et al. J Cosmet Sci, 2013;64(1):45–58 (at four months).

Is it better to apply scalp treatments at night?

Yes, for two reasons. Human hair follicles contain their own peripheral circadian clock, and an overnight application leaves the actives undisturbed on the scalp for hours.

Daytime application competes with brushing, styling, heat and perspiration. A water-based formula matters here: an oil-based one transfers onto bedding instead of absorbing.

Frequently Asked

Everything You Need To Know

How is this different from harsh chemical treatments and heavy oil serums?

Oils and dropper serums put most of their volume on the hair shaft, which does nothing for the follicle and everything for greasy roots. Döconie is water-based and delivered through a precision 360° nozzle that reaches the scalp itself. It absorbs in seconds and needs no washing out — and it contains no pharmaceutical actives.

How long until I see a difference?

Give it a full three months of nightly use before judging — roughly how long a resting follicle takes to re-enter visible growth. Most women report first visible changes around the part line and hairline between weeks 8 and 12 — and almost nobody sees anything in the first month. Photograph the same section under the same lighting every four weeks; it's far more reliable than memory.

Are there side effects?

Döconie 5D is a topical cosmetic, not a pharmaceutical. There's no shedding phase at the start and no rebound shedding if you stop. The most common issue is simple sensitivity to a botanical ingredient — patch test on your inner forearm for 24 hours if you have reactive skin, and avoid broken or irritated scalp.

Is it safe while pregnant or breastfeeding?

It's a topical cosmetic with no pharmaceutical actives, and postpartum women are a core group we formulated for. That said, we're not your doctor: check with your physician or midwife before adding any new product during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

How often should I use it, and how does it fit my routine?

Every night — about sixty seconds. Spray onto the scalp, massage in for thirty seconds, go to sleep. Consistency matters far more than quantity.

Apply to a completely dry scalp, or a clean towel-dried scalp after showering. Avoid heavy leave-in conditioners on the roots beforehand. Next morning, use your usual heat protectant or hairspray on the strands — there's no residue or buildup to work around.

Is it suitable for all hair types and colours?

Yes. The spray works on the scalp rather than the hair shaft, so texture is largely irrelevant — straight, wavy, curly, coily, fine or coarse all behave the same. It's dye-free, so it won't strip or alter colour-treated hair.

Will I lose my results if I stop using it?

There's no rebound shedding here. But be realistic: if your thinning is driven by ongoing hormonal factors, those don't go away when the bottle runs out. If your shedding was situational — postpartum telogen effluvium, a stressful stretch, a nutritional gap — you're a good candidate to stop once you've reached the density you want.

Which supply should I choose?

One bottle is a genuine 10 weeks. Since results build over about three months, the 20-week option is the one most customers end up wishing they'd started with — it covers that with a buffer, and works out cheaper per night. The 30-week supply is for anyone who already knows this is a long-term routine.

What if it doesn't work for me?

Email Care@doconie.com within 90 days and we'll refund you in full. No returns process, no interrogation.
